2023 Prime Minister’s Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in Secondary Schools

Congratulations to Ms Donna Buckley from John Curtin College of the Arts who has received the Prime Minister’s Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in Secondary Schools, in the 2023 Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science.

Donna Buckley inspires students with diverse, creative backgrounds, by applying mathematics to real-world problems and introducing them to future career opportunities in science. Initiatives she has led include a Maths Talent Quest, which encourages students to think creatively about mathematics, and a cohort of coders at the school as part of the Perth Girls’ Programming Network.

Donna  also established an accredited cybersecurity course in Western Australia to educate the next generation about ways to make our country more safe and secure in an online environment.

Donna’s passion for innovative ways of making mathematics and cybersecurity more engaging has had a significant impact on both science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) educators and students in Western Australia.

Donna Buckley has been on the Board of the Mathematical Association of Western Australia (MAWA) for 15 years. She works closely with the review of the Australian Curriculum and is the author of the MAWA Mathematics Essential Textbooks Units 1 to 4.

Donna is also a member of ECAWA, and made very well received presentations at the 2022 and 2023 ECAWA State Conferences.
