Digital Literacy plays a big impact on our children’s lives. Smart phones, the internet, Kindles, tablets and more are being used to socialise, educate and entertain.
More and more people are taking on the trend of smart phones and tablets.
This means that there is a greater demand for software and applications that make life easier for the everyday person.
Teaching young people to code, think creatively and reason systematically helps prepare them for the future and forever changing technological world.
In this hour and a half session, Stewart Crainie of Mercy College will provide teachers of students in Years 3- 8 with a hands-on experience with computer programming. Participants will also take away with them resources that are readily available from the internet or App Store, that will help provide a curriculum to teach students how to code.
The first part of the session will focus on the abundance of free resources there are to get you started with your very own ‘After School Programming Club’ or integrating within your already running classes. Participants will make the courageous move to dive deep and explore the Codecademy website and challenge themselves to learn the basics of web-design.
After dabbling with Codecademy, participants will explore other resources available on the App Store.
This session will aim to challenge participants and help them make a move into the world of digital literacy and computer programming. While this is challenging, participants should walk away feeling confident in facilitating lessons designed to help kids to code.
