Masterclass – almost full

Steven Payne from http://standouteducation.com.au/This masterclass introduces teachers to core computer science and programming concepts, and computational thinking skills within Minecraft: Education Edition, and introduces Microsoft MakeCode, a block- and JavaScript-programming editor within the game.

Teachers will explore the features of Minecraft and Makecode and will synthesise the following programming concepts in new and creative ways through a self-directed coding project:

  • Events
  • Coordinates
  • Variables
  • Conditionals
  • Functions and Parameters
  • Iteration
  • Arrays
  • Artificial intelligence

Objectives:

  • To understand the importance of project-based learning
  • To learn about Minecraft and the coding opportunities with Code builder and MakeCode
  • To know about the different ways of incorporating Minecraft and Makecode across the curriculum
  • To experience Minecraft as a learner and a teacher
  • To develop independent projects and lesson ideas

Requirements:

Participants are expected to bring and work on their own computers. A PC, laptop or tablet with an external mouse is recommended.

Participants will need to have Minecraft: Education Edition installed– this is available free of charge for Department of Education and CEWA teachers: Log in with your Office 365 account.

Teachers at independent schools will need to check with their IT departments about access.

Outline:

Friday the 7th of June
9:00am Registration
9:30am – Introduction to Minecraft: Education Edition
10:00am – Morning Tea (provided)
10:30am – Guided activities with hands-on coding in Minecraft
12:30pm – Lunch (provided)
1:30pm – 3:30pm – Exploration of Curriculum lessons and worlds. Self-directed independent projects.

Room: Ningaloo Room, Microsoft, Level 10, 100 St George’s Terrace – Please meet in the Microsoft Reception Area.

Parking and Travel:
There is no parking available for Masterclass participants Microsoft building. We suggest that you consider using Wilson Parking (Central Park) or the Perth Convention Centre Car Park or better still, use public transport to get to the site.

About the Presenter:

A former teacher, Steven Payne has worked with the Microsoft Education team for the past five years as a learning consultant, supporting school leaders, teachers, and students to make the most of technology.

Steven Payne is a Minecraft Certified Trainer, demonstrating his deep understanding and experience of using Minecraft as a platform for learning.
