Workshop: Binary Numbers and what they do inside the Computer

ECAWA#2025 State Conference Workshop:

Binary Numbers and what they do inside the Computer

Presented by

Dr Karsten Schulz
Principal Engineer, Digital Technologies Institute

The computer processor is one of the most amazing machines ever invented. Worldwide, billions of them carry out operations silently and efficiently, enabling many of the services that we have come to appreciate in our lives. But how do they work?

What does the workshop include?
This session will start with a primer in binary number and data representation. We count in binary, manipulate binary data, store it and learn what a computer algorithm looks like from the perspective of the computer.

By the end of the workshop, participants will:
– be able to count in binary
– know why and how computers use binary numbers
– name the main components of a CPU
– understand data and control flow

Amazement alert:

Participants will be able to hold an actual Variable in their hands!

Intended Audience:

Those interested in STEM, General Primary, Junior Primary, Middle / Upper Primary, Middle Secondary (7 – 9), Senior Secondary (10 – 12), Cybersecurity, New Teachers, Out of Area Teachers
