ECAWA presents:

Security and Computer Science workshops

A full day workshop on Thursday the 4th of October, 2018 at ECU Joondalup, Building 18 Level 4 Room 419.

♦Presented by Michelle Ellis (ECU), Karen Owens (ECU), Martin Cooper (Curtin), David Brown (St Mary’s AGS) and Kane Pittard

This is an opportunity to participate in some very popular workshops previously presented at the ECAWA 2018 State Conference. Revisit a favourite workshop or go to one you couldn’t get to in June.

You will need BYO wireless enabled device along with you. If you are bringing along a school owned device please ensure that you have sufficient permissions to be able to join the wireless network.

The day will include:

8:30 – Coffee

9:00 – Network Security, why bother?   Presenter – Karen Owens
Karen Owens works in Information Security Management at ECU. Karen will present a one hour session on network infrastructure at ECU including the number of servers, types of servers, backups, cloud solutions and hardware infrastructure.

This will be followed by two visits:

  1. ECU’s Security Control Centre
  2. ECU’s IT Service Centre

10:30 – Coffee

11:00 – Computational thinking with Python Turtle   Presenter – Martin Cooper
This workshop will utilise Python Turtle, a modern variant of the original LOGO from MIT.
Participants will undertake a series of activities in which, while familiarising themselves with Python Turtle, they will engage in computational thinking.

12:30 – Lunch (provided)

1:30 – Authentic student software application development using Swift and Xcode   Presenters – David Brown, Kane Pittard
This session will outline the experiences and challenges of providing students the opportunity to work with real world clients.

Using Xcode and Swift you will be guided through the process of building a user interface (UI) with navigation and tab views similar to everyday apps you use today.
With these skills you will begin to see the practice of Model, View, Controller (MVC) which is essential for modern app development. It will reflect on the process the students followed and the use of the Swift language and Xcode development environment as effective teaching tools.

Please bring along your Mac laptop with Xcode if you would like to participate.

3:00 – Finish
