Finding Direction – using exam data to direct Stage 3 Computer Science

As teachers of Computer Science we are normally presented with our previous year’s student’s results during the first few weeks of the new academic year. We all review them and comment to our HODS/Deputies on how well or otherwise our expectations matched the WACE reality.
Proactive teachers will take on board lessons learned from these results and make the relevant adjustments to their own teaching paradigms.
There are, however, other areas of information also available to the teacher, such as the standards setting document and the Chief Examiner & Marker reports, which retrospectively can offer informative direction especially when preparing students for exams.
This presentation will review all relative data, where to access it; how to use it so that delivering teachers can better inform themselves on overall areas of topic weakness and strengths as well as improving examination techniques.
About the Presenter:
Mike Ross has over 10 years’ experience as a teacher of Information Systems and Computer Science and is Head of Business & Computing at Ballajura Community College. He has been involved in both marking and examination panels and has held the position of Chief Marker and Chief Examiner over the past few years.
Mike currently is a member of the Computer Science CAC panel and has been involved in the design and implementation of the current and forthcoming Computer Science syllabus.
Mike lives in sunny Perth with his wife, youngest child, a poodle called Frodo and a collection of 90 cactii!
